NEW BURR OAK TABLE

Made for us by senior craftsman Daren Millman, this Burr Oak table is an example of how furniture designers and makers should just get out of the way and allow the wood to do the talking. A burr is a part of a normal tree that maybe because of a bit of damage loses its direction of growth. The result is a lump like growth, often on the side of the tree, that can look from the outside like a large warty growth, which is pretty much what it is. Inside, the wood in the burr is winding round and round itself giving a magnificent complex surface. For us woodworkers burr is difficult stuff to handle as it dries unevenly and is unpredictable in how it will twist and move. Daren jointed several small pieces of burr together to help create this wonderful simple woody image.
