Last weeks North Devon Journal, our local paper, carried the following article about an exhibition some of our students are staging in Bideford:’Nine top international furniture makers and designers are showing their work in Bideford for six weeks.Carefully crafted work will be on display at the Praxis Gallery, 1 Market Place from June 16 to August 1.All nine of the makers trained at the David Savage workshop, near Shebbear, where they learned craftsmanship and design to the highest levels.The exhibition aims to highlight contemporaray and classic design concepts and exceptional, traditional craftsmanship in fine furniture making.Among the nine designer/makers are two Americans, one Swiss and an Irishman. Many had previous successful careers before retraining as cabinet makers, and come from diverse backgrounds. Exhibitors’ previous careers include science, academia, information technology, company administration and graphic design.The exhibits will include modern, contemporary work and more traditional pieces with a modern interpretation, Many of the items will be for sale, while other pieces are purely for display.Visitors will be able to commission pieces of bespoke fine furniture from any of the designer/makers showing in the exhibition.’The Praxis Gallery is open Monday to Saturday, 11am to 4pm, and admission is free.For more information contact Andy Luckraft.
