A Makers Year 70 Shanghai Design Auction

Shanghai Design The auction.

One of the best thing about this offer was to be the auction. The Chinese love an auction, there is something about the competition the public nature the excitement they go for, usually. We in the “Collectable Section” of the Shanghai Design were to be the exclusive benefactors of the auction, which was to be held on day three of four days. that was Sunday at 5.30.

To be frank we were not expecting sales from the stand. the Chinese are worse that the British at quick buying decisions so we knew that but the idea that we could place unique pieces in the hands of collectors by way of an auction was real bonus . Last year the auction had been a success and sold 75% of all the lots. I heard one and three quarter million dollars in sales and my eyeballs turn to dollar signs!

The auction house IPAC had very recently produced a great catalogue of work to be auctioned including all the contents of our stand. They also produced nice framed images of the catalogue pages that we placed beneath each piece that told how to buy and what to do at the auction. These were photographed thousands of times.

So the days leading up to the auction were exciting, we “Nee Hah” away like mad and promoted the auction at every opportunity.

Our main aim other than this was to make contacts for the future and possibly find an agent who could represent us in China but that another tale.
