This is the first of a series of signature tables that David Savage will be making on the theme of riverbanks. This is a simple but very sophisticated table in English Oak. The ripples on the side of the table are evocative of the way the banks of rivers are eroded by nature. This is contrasted with smooth straight surfaces. But not so smooth, these are hand finished from the cutting edge, never sandpapered before wax polishing. Each plane stroke leaves a perfect channel slightly concave. It’s neighbour, which is also perfect but not totally the same, slightly deeper or wider or not exactly parallel. Like an oak leaf each is the same but slightly different, there is a “Variance”. This is a surface that cannot be easily seen but is alive to the touch bearing witness to the skill taken in its making.
