Matthijs Van Daal

We recently had the great pleasure of hosting Matthijs (pronounced Mattias) on our one month course. Matthijs is a self taught maker, and kindly sent us this letter about his experience here at the Rowden Farm Workshops.

Hi David,
I have returned safely here in Spain. To my surprise it is raining over here now, but at least that means it´s not too big a big shock…

About the course:
Being a self-taught furniture maker, I was looking to get some feedback and reference from other furnituremakers and preferably really good ones! Well, I got all that: To see how others approach the process of designing and making a challenging piece of furniture, and how they solve problems. It was very good to have conversations with you, Daren and Steve and to hear and to see how you work. It has been inspiring and clarifying in many ways. It was good to get confirmed that I am on the right track as well as to learn new ways and get new insights. To see what other students are making, to see them work and to discuss the business of furnituremaking with them has all been very helpful and inspiring.
All in all it was a very fruitful month and I am very happy I decided to do it.

Thanks for everything, we´ll be in touch!
Best wishes, Matthijs

Here are some pictures of Matthijs’ work from his month at Rowden Farm Workshops. A delightful take on the traditional Harry’s Chair.
