chairs 2004

I am just leaving for an “International Symposium of Chairmakers” At Westonbirt Arboetum near Tetbury Gloucester. The symposium ( contributions needed for a collective noun for a gathering of 100 or so chairmakers: a splinter of chairmakers perhaps, or is it a bottom of chaimakers!)The symposium is accompanied by an exhibition of chairs, silly of me to think it might be anything else. Each member of the symposium being asked to bring one chair as a contribution to the exhibition. This is open between May 1st and May 3rd with an auction of some chairs brought by makers from abroad on the last dayat 2.15pm.

I am looking forward to a few days out though I am fed up it coincides with holiday weekend and my family will not be with us. We should all get something out of this; the chance to share ideas and methods, plot against the Crafts Council and hopefully have a jolly bash. To anyone wanting to say hello, I will be moderating a seminar on the Monday morning on Contemporary Design in Chairmaking. I understand that members of the public can attend these final day seminars and I look forward to seeing you all there.for more info go to their site www.chairs2004.org.uk
