Apprentice Piece

Rob Hughes cabinet in English Walnut

This is an “apprentice piece” being made in our workshops right now by student craftsman Rob Hughes. It is an ancient practice to make a piece of work to demonstrate ones skill and knowledge. The term “Masterpiece” comes from this process, where a journeyman would present a serious piece of work for consideration by fellow Guild members, so being allowed to become a master craftsman and being allowed to employ apprentices. All very Trade Union, closed shop, and restrictive. Nowadays we lack that kind of structure however the act of making a good piece that teaches you techniques then demonstrates your skill to others is still valid.
