This beautiful burr oak and walnut backgammon table with a matching pair of walnut chairs. They came about as a result of an exhibition in London. My clients to be saw “Gracie”, a dining chairs set of mine, and promptly commissioned a set of ten for their Farmhouse in Wales. “Gracie and her Sisters” were made in our workshops.
HAND MADE BACKGAMMON TABLE FOR WELSH FARMHOUSE
A year or so later they contacted me again. Could I make a games table for an adjacent room that would work with 2 more chairs, so their set was brought up to twelve. Quentin had an old chess set saved from childhood, he also wanted a backgammon board and a place to store all the pieces of both games.
QUENTIN HAD AN OLD CHESS SET SAVED FROM CHILDHOOD
I talked with Quentin and Carol about different timbers showing them samples of burrs and exotic figured timber from our barns. We selected burr oak for the table top Macassar Ebony and Quilted Maple for the backgammon and chessboard with Walnut to match the chairs for the table legs.
AS I DEVELOPED THE DESIGN CAROL SUGGESTED A MOTIF BE PLACED ON THE BACKGAMMON BOARD…
…that reflected the cruck in the roof structure of the ancient welsh farmhouse. The table legs are very special. A simple and resolved solution, elegant enough to meet my clients brief sitting on 3 feet which works well on the uneven flagstone floor. They match the curve and beauty of the chairs whilst the avoid structural problems.
